Why do we have a Residents Association?

The GRA acts to represent the interests of Greenbrier Residents in dealing with local government entities, public utilities, nearby land owners and property developers.  A recent list of such entities and organizations includes:

  • Lexington Fayette Urban County Council
  • LFUCG Planning Commission
  • LFUCG Traffic Engineering
  • Kentucky Highway Department, District 7
  • Kentucky Utilities

Opposition by the GRA played a role in halting construction of a proposed “vineyard” – wine tasting – outdoor concert venue on US 60 near Walnut Grove.
While it is not possible to halt development in our area, efforts by the GRA have resulted in the reduced density of developments and the set aside of green space.
The GRA negotiated the first Neighborhood Development Overlay in Lexington.  Other neighborhoods have since followed suit.  A disturbing trend in our nation is the bulldozing of older homes and the subdivision of property into smaller parcels.  NDOs insure that will not happen in Greenbrier.  If the owner of the golf course chooses to redevelop their property, they must adhere to the the NDO standards to preserve the unique character of our neighborhood.
The GRA negotiated the closing of Walnut Grove Lane to through traffic, with a subsequent decrease in traffic flow through Greenbrier.  A new elementary school is scheduled to open near the intersection of Deer Haven and Polo Club in 2015.  Imagine what the traffic impact would be like without this closing.
As volunteers, we can only do so much.  At times it has been necessary to hire legal and professional assistance in these matters.  Your GRA dues pay for these professional fees, as well as:

  • Maintenance and Plantings of Front and Rear Entrances
  • Christmas Decorations for both Entrances
  • Security Cameras at both Entrances (Visible and Infrared)
  • Utility Services for Entrances (Front: power and water, Rear: power)
  • Website and E-mail System
  • Voice Mail System
  • Message Signage
  • Postage and Printing
  • Neighborhood Garage Sale Advertising and Signage

In 2014 we will be adding internet service at both entrances for improved access to security camera photos.
Dues paying members enjoy the following benefits:

  • Greenbrier Neighborhood Directory
